Returning to Washington
Grinware was last doing business in Washington in 2004. We have had quite a trip since that time, learned a lot, and
we are now re-launching Grinware Tech in the North Sound-area.
This subject is vast and complex which is why there are so many books and articles
about the topic. Here is just a few items to keep in mind:
Many reads (OLAP-like load) means a lot
of RAM.
Many concurrent users means more spindles and faster RPM versus large drives for capacity.
Fast writes
(OLTP/ERP load) means using RAID1 or RAID0+1 for the disk set.
Reporting database with very few updates/inserts and
large number of reads means RAID5.
As of August 2008, AMD Opteron processors with 64-bit, 64GB RAM, and EMC SAN with Windows
Server 2003 R2 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005 SP2 is a great solution for most business applications.
